The competition calls for individuals to submit original product ideas that could be manufactured or created in the Erie region, with the possibility of creating new small businesses. The compitition was initiated by Civitas, a local advocacy group working collaboratively on transportation, land use, zoning, sustainability, preservation, education and economic development – to create a greater Erie.

In 2015, Made in Erie Training workshops were created to help educate people to design products that are functionally, ergonomically, aesthetically excellent.

In 2018, the Idea Fund “adopted” the competition as it closely aligns with the organization’s goals of supporting early entrepreneurial development. Under the umbrella of the Idea Fund, both MIE design lab and IE will return to the stage after a one year hiatus. The MIE will return to the Erie County Public Library under their new initiative – the Idea Lab – and the IE competition, will be held at the Erie Art Museum. The competition is open to individuals or teams, 18 years old and over, whose product design could be manufactured in the Greater Erie Area.

The contest launches early winter 2019.

An independent panel of judges will select fifteen semi-finalists to exhibit their ideas.

Four top finalists will be chosen to compete for over $10,000 in cash and assistance prizes.
